he actually does lots of covers–he’s a huge stones, stooges and mott the hoople fan as well.
Yeah, when we saw him the other night, he did MTH’s “All the Young Dudes.”
he and i probably bonded over mott more than anything. i’ve never heard him do that–he typically tends toward more obscure hunter stuff like “irene wild” and “i wish i was your mother.” and his velvets connection also has an austin hook. though al was plainly a big fan of the band before, he became friends with the generally reclusive sterling morrison, who lived in austin and earned a phd in English there post-velvets.
